Zuiderpark, a 100-year-old public park, lies in the heart of the city. To preserve it and make it future-proof, the municipality has developed a vision for Zuiderpark. This vision contains building blocks for finding a balance within Zuiderpark, ensuring it remains a place for both people and wildlife. This year, the municipality is specifically investing in nature and water quality.

Over the past few years, residents have been working together on a vision for Zuiderpark. This vision identifies where there’s room for events, sports, and where nature should be given the space it deserves. The vision also emphasizes the importance of a clean and accessible park. Alderman Robert Barker (Outdoor Space): “It’s important to find a balance between sports, recreation, and nature in this beautiful public park. We’ve found this together with the residents in the new vision. Now we’re going to work on it.”

Investing in the Zuiderpark

The total number of requests is considerable, which is not surprising considering it’s a long-term vision. However, the municipality will already be getting started in the coming months. A park manager has been appointed, and nearly €2 million will be invested in eight projects. Specifically, a food swamp forest will be created, wildflower meadows will be sown, the Doorenbosheuvels will be tackled, and water quality will be improved. Alderman Barker: “In the coming period, we’ll be giving Zuiderpark a significant boost. We’ll be addressing the greenery and water and making it a more pleasant place for both people and animals.”
