Climate change is also becoming increasingly visible in The Hague. Large amounts of rain are causing flooding more often. Measures, such as the construction of green roofs or the greening of gardens, are needed to collect water. To help residents of The Hague take these kinds of measures, the municipality has created a subsidy. This subsidy was previously available for a limited number of districts, but is now being opened up to the entire city.
Alderman Robert Barker (Environment): ‘We need to work together to tackle climate change. Nuisance caused by heavy rain showers can be prevented by collecting more rainwater. Every resident of The Hague can contribute to this with small measures in the garden or on the roof. With the subsidy, we help people take measures such as purchasing a rain barrel, greening the garden or installing a green roof. If everyone does something, we can make a difference together. That is why the subsidy is now open to everyone in The Hague.’
The subsidy offers a reimbursement of 50% of the costs of the measure. For people with an Ooievaarspas, the municipality reimburses all costs incurred. The scheme runs until the end of 2026.
