In a world increasingly shaped by digital interaction, being disconnected can mean being left behind—especially for elderly residents and people from migrant backgrounds. That’s where EmpowerSocial: Digital Skills and Community Program steps in.
Launched by Beauty In Every Life (BIEL) and proudly supported by Den Haag Gemeente, EmpowerSocial is a forward-thinking community initiative designed to empower some of The Hague’s most vulnerable residents by equipping them with vital digital skills and fostering strong, supportive connections.
The program targets elderly individuals who live in The Hague, including those from minority and migrant communities—groups who often face unique challenges when it comes to technology. Whether it’s navigating online healthcare portals, avoiding scams, or simply staying in touch with family, these skills are no longer optional—they’re essential.
Over the course of 6 months, participants engage in hands-on digital training sessions hosted in the Hague. Through the innovative “Tech Buddies” program, each senior is paired with a younger volunteer, creating a bridge between generations and a safe space for questions, learning, and friendship.
“EmpowerSocial is about more than teaching skills,” says a BIEL coordinator. “It’s about restoring confidence, dignity, and connection.”
Beyond training, participants join a dedicated WhatsApp group to stay socially connected and supported throughout the week. They also have the opportunity to attend BIEL’s social events, like Dine Together cooking workshop, that help turn strangers into friends.
With multilingual support, including English and Dutch, and a strong emphasis on cultural sensitivity, EmpowerSocial is as inclusive as it is impactful.
As the program grows, it offers a hopeful vision for a digitally connected, socially thriving The Hague – where no one is left behind, regardless of age or background.
