Residents of The Hague can get started again with Operation Steenbreek: a large-scale campaign to green up paved gardens, streets and neighbourhoods. Until 31 October, tiles can be exchanged for free plants. This can be done individually or together with neighbours, schools and organisations. Operation Steenbreek is being organised for the tenth year in a row this year. In recent years, more than 330,000 tiles have been replaced by greenery. By participating in the campaign, which is organised by Duurzaam Den Haag, everyone can help green up The Hague.

Alderman Robert Barker (Outdoor Space, Animal Welfare & Environment) encourages everyone to participate: ‘A green city is more pleasant for people and animals to live in. Every tile we replace with greenery helps cool our city on hot days and reduces flooding during heavy rainfall. We also increase biodiversity by adding more greenery. Together we can make a big difference, which is why I call on everyone to take action. Remove tiles from your garden or street and join in!’

Director of Duurzaam Den Haag Joris Wijsmuller: ‘We are busy greening the city. Especially in urbanized neighborhoods, such as the Schilderswijk, more green is important for a healthier and more attractive living environment. And it is also just great fun to make the neighborhood more beautiful together with residents!’

How does it work?

From 21 March to 31 October, residents can hand in tiles at the care nursery Mens en Tuin and receive free plants in return. For larger actions (more than 20 m² or 200 paving tiles), the municipality provides a free container. Residents can also get started together with their street, neighbourhood or school and register their action for extra support.
