Good news for young travellers and their parents: starting this month, children aged 4 to 11 in The Hague can apply for a special OV chip card that allows them to travel for free on HTM buses and trams. Parents can apply for the card at denhaag.nl/kidsvoorniks .

Alderman Arjen Kapteijns (Mobility) is pleased that the trial can now really start: “With Kids for Nothing, we give all children in The Hague the opportunity to discover our beautiful city. Whether that is for a day at the beach or an afternoon of shopping in the city centre. I hope that as many parents and carers as possible will apply for the card now that it is possible.”

The municipality of The Hague hopes that the trial will lead to an increase in the number of public transport journeys from all parts of The Hague. Kapteijns: “With this trial, we want to ensure that children can travel more easily, for example to sports or friends. We hope that they and their parents will see public transport as an attractive and accessible alternative. And that Ooievaarspas holders in particular will find this support in the back.”

Kids for Nothing will be considered successful if at least 30% of all children register and if more people travel by public transport. Kapteijns: “ We are looking forward to the results of the pilot. If it is successful, we will be happy to see if we can extend the free transport for children.” The trial will last until 31 December 2026.

About Kids for Nothing

The free OV chip card is valid on all HTM trams and buses. Free travel does not apply to trains or metros. Parents or guardians can apply for the OV card free of charge. This is possible from today via www.denhaag.nl/kidsvoorniks . Parents need a DigiD, the child’s BSN number and a digital photo of the child. The card will arrive in the letterbox ten working days later. The card is then immediately ready for use.

More information about Kids for Nothing and the application process can be found at denhaag.nl/kidsvoorniks .
