A stolen bike might not usually make headlines in the Netherlands, but this one deserves a closer look.
Local journalist and BBC News foreign correspondent Anna Holligan, who lives in The Hague, is appealing to the community for help after her distinctive and deeply meaningful bicycle was stolen.
“This isn’t just about losing a mode of transport,” she shared on LinkedIn. “I feel compelled to pay tribute to a bike that changed my life.”
Anna’s bike wasn’t just part of her daily commute — it was the beating heart of her innovative “Bike Bureau,” a mobile newsroom she co-created with journalist Kate Vandy, supported by Morwen Williams. From this saddle, Anna reported international stories while cycling, earning her the Climate Communication Inspiration from Abroad Award.
The bike also represented a balancing act — between motherhood and a demanding journalism career. It enabled school runs and spontaneous adventures with her daughter while opening doors to professional opportunities, from speaking engagements to university collaborations.
If you’ve seen this distinctive cargo-style bike or have any tips, Anna would love to hear from you.
