In order to improve road safety, the municipality of The Hague has been assigned two new locations for Flexflitsers (mobile speed cameras) by the Public Prosecution Service (OM). These locations are both on the Rotterdamsebaan. The first flexflitser was placed today.

The mobile speed cameras register speeding violations and ensure that drivers who drive too fast are fined. On the Rotterdamsebaan, drivers drive an average of 85 km/h, while the maximum speed is 70 km/h. In extreme cases, speeds of 180 to 220 km/h have been measured.

By placing flex flashers at these two locations, the municipality wants to tackle the dangerous situation and make traffic safer. Flex flashers are mobile speed cameras that can be used flexibly. They register speeding violations, after which people are fined, just like fixed speed cameras. By being able to change locations, enforcement can be carried out at more places where people drive too fast.

Previous experiences show that the OM’s flex flashers are effective. Flex flashers have also helped to make traffic safer at the Erasmusweg. The OM is responsible for installing the flex flashers. The municipality can request a flex flasher based on, among other things, speed data and accident figures. This allows targeted action to be taken in places where speeding violations are a problem and pose a major risk.

Road safety

In order to structurally and structuredly improve road safety, the municipality of The Hague has created the Road Safety Implementation Programme 2023-2026 . The programme has been drawn up on the basis of several themes. Examples of these themes are safe infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians, safe speeds, learning safe traffic behaviour and unlearning unwanted and antisocial traffic behaviour. With the use of flex flashers, The Hague is taking another important step towards safer traffic and a liveable city for everyone.
