The municipalities of The Hague, Rijswijk, Leidschendam-Voorburg, the province of South Holland and the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Region (MRDH) are joining forces to improve the Nieuwe Tolbrug, popularly known as the ‘chicken bridge’. The bridge, a national monument, is a bottleneck in the important cycle route between Pijnacker and The Hague.
“We want to keep our region healthy and sustainably accessible,” says The Hague alderman Robert van Asten. “I am pleased that we are all working together to improve the chicken bridge. This way, people can cycle everywhere more safely and easily, for example from home to work or school.”
The Nieuwe Tolbrug is a narrow, steep drawbridge that is a challenge for cyclists in particular. The bridge is too steep and narrow to cycle across. Cyclists have to dismount, which affects the flow of traffic and safety. The parties involved are committed to good cycling infrastructure and healthy and sustainable accessibility of the Rotterdam-The Hague region.
