Together with residents, corporations and neighbourhood organisations, the municipality of The Hague has discussed the future of Mariahoeve recently. The opportunities, ideas and wishes from the neighbourhood have been incorporated as much as possible in the Ambition Document Mariahoeve. The plans describe the tasks that lie ahead and also what is needed to keep the neighbourhood vital, liveable and pleasant in the future. These ambitions are now before the municipal council.
Alderman for Urban Development Robert van Asten, about the plans: “Mariahoeve is a beautiful green district and the current and future residents deserve our attention to ensure that it will continue to be a vibrant, vital district in 25 years. With neighborhoods where young and old can live, work, play safely outside and recreate in the greenery and where there is a vibrant neighborhood economy. With these plans, that vision of the future is coming closer!”
Much of the real estate is over 50 years old and is in need of renovation and sustainability. The district must also be prepared for the transition to clean heat. In addition, attention must be paid to the liveability and level of facilities in the district. There is a need for sufficient housing to enable flow within the district. By bringing together various issues, such as the energy transition, climate adaptation, increasing biodiversity, management of greenery or road and sewer maintenance, it is possible to make sustainable investments in the district. The starting point is to do this with care for the cultural-historical values of the district.
Six ambitions
The following six ambitions are central to the ambition document:
1. A green and sustainable neighbourhood
2. A healthy and social neighbourhood
3. Customised growth
4. A nice neighbourhood for everyone
5. A vibrant neighbourhood economy (see also plans for the Mariahoeve shopping centreRIS321151+Appendix+2_20250115_PUK+Mariahoeve+Shopping centre )
6. A well-connected neighbourhood
Participation
In order to get a good picture of the qualities and tasks of Mariahoeve, information was collected from residents, entrepreneurs and neighborhood organizations. This was done by, for example, street conversations, youth conversations, a residents’ evening, entrepreneurs’ evening and online questionnaire. This gave a better picture of how stakeholders and residents experience their living environment and what wishes and challenges they see for the future of their neighborhood.
Follow-up
After the determination of the ambition document, the ambitions are elaborated into a Mariahoeve area program. For the area program, the participation will be continued. In the coming months, a decision for a municipal protected cityscape for Mariahoeve will also be worked on.
