The Municipality of The Hague is creating a new nature reserve of almost 13 hectares on the border of The Hague and Leidschendam-Voorburg. A meadow there will be transformed into a nature reserve called Vlietweide. The first trees will be planted on November 16th.
A meadow lies between the Vliet River and the highway. In the coming period, this area, called Vlietweide, will be transformed into a nature reserve. Shallow ponds will be created. Various trees, shrubs, and flowers will also be planted. This will make Vlietweide an attractive habitat for various species of birds, toads, and insects. The area will also be accessible to visitors. A walking path will be constructed, benches will be installed, and a playground will be created. Alderman Robert Barker (Outdoor Space, Green Space, Animal Welfare): “It’s unique that we can create such a large nature reserve in a busy city like The Hague. This area will continue to take shape in the coming period. We’ll start planting the first trees in November, and I hope to hear the first birdsong here soon.”
Nature plan
The plan to transform this area into a nature reserve stems from The Hague’s coalition agreement and stems from a plan by residents and the AVN nature association. The Vlietweide is one of seven locations where the municipality will be creating more space for nature in the coming period. Alderman Barker: “Nature is under pressure. It’s important that nature also has space in The Hague. With various plans, we’re ensuring that various plants, insects, birds, and other animals also have a place in The Hague.”
Planting trees and playground
On Sunday, November 16, 2025, during Climate Week, work will begin in Vlietweide with the planting of trees. Other work, such as the construction of water features, walking paths, and a playground, will begin in May 2026. The renovated Vlietweide will be completed by the end of 2026.
Nearly two thousand households will be informed about the plans this week. They will also be asked to vote for their favorite playground. More information can be found at https://www.hethaagsegroen.nl/vlietweide
