Starting January 1, 2026, a new traffic sign will be introduced for zero-emission zones and environmental zones. This will reduce the need for different signs, making them clearer for drivers.
The new traffic sign indicates that drivers are entering a zone where vehicles emitting harmful substances have limited or no access. The sign also indicates which vehicles are not permitted in the zone. Municipalities will replace the old signs between January 1 and July 1, 2026.
The access rules for zero-emission zones and environmental zones will remain the same. The new traffic sign for zero-emission zones and environmental zones consists of two parts. The top sign, the zone sign, indicates that you are entering an area where certain vehicles emitting harmful substances are prohibited. This consists of a white sign with the text “ZONE” and a red circle with a car emitting exhaust fumes inside. Below that, signs indicate which vehicles are prohibited from entering the zone. Zero-emission zones and environmental zones each have their own corresponding signs to identify them.
Zero-emission zone traffic sign
In a zero-emission zone, vans and trucks running on petrol, (bio)diesel, or LPG will eventually no longer be permitted. The transition will be phased in, giving businesses and individuals time to switch to clean transport. Municipalities with a zero-emission zone will install a zone sign over the next six months, along with a sign depicting a van and truck.
More information about the access regulations can be found at opwegnaarzes.nl/toegangsregels . Want to know if your vehicle is still allowed in the zero-emission zone? Check your license plate at kentekencheck.opwegnaarzes.nl .
Traffic sign environmental zone
An environmental zone applies to diesel-powered trucks, buses, and vans. In Amsterdam, Arnhem, The Hague, and Utrecht, the environmental zone also applies to diesel passenger cars. In environmental zones, a zone sign will be displayed, with several signs underneath indicating which vehicles are not permitted. This depends on their emission class. The combination of emission class and vehicles shown on the sign will not be allowed access.
Cleaner transport for a better living environment
Zero-emission zones create a better living environment and a better climate. Cleaner vehicles reduce CO2 emissions, ensure cleaner air, and prevent noise and nuisance.
