Scheveningen has a new covered bicycle shed. Alderman Arjen Kapteijns opened the new covered and managed shed ‘Palaceplein’ at Gevers Deynootweg 1134 today together with dozens of cyclists and the bicycle DJ. The new shed replaces the old, outdoor shed on Palaceplein. The procession with the alderman symbolically left from this old shed to the new one.

Alderman Arjen Kapteijns (Mobility): ‘ With this new parking facility, we are making it even more attractive to come to the beach by bike. We want people to be able to travel comfortably, sustainably and relaxed. That is good for accessibility, liveability and air quality in the city.’

Free, guarded and close to the sea

The covered bicycle shed offers space for over 180 bicycles, including space for cargo bikes, crate bikes and other larger models. Visitors can safely and free of charge park their bicycles there – less than a minute’s walk from the boulevard and the Pier. During the summer period, the shed is also open extra long and there are managers present. The location is therefore perfect for a day at the beach or a visit to shops and restaurants.

The bicycle shed at Palaceplein is the second new bicycle shed in Scheveningen. In April, a shed was opened at Noordboulevard, close to the Zwarte Pad. With the arrival of the two bicycle sheds, the municipality makes it even easier to choose the bicycle when you come to the seaside resort.

Cycling to the beach

More and more visitors come to the beach by bike. On busy days, the bike parking spaces fill up quickly. By placing extra parking spaces and asking visitors to put their bikes in them, the boulevard remains bike-free. This leaves enough space for pedestrians, wheelchairs, strollers and emergency services.

With the call ‘Do something crazy, put your bike in the rack’ the municipality encourages everyone to use the free bike shed. That makes a day at the beach more pleasant, safer and better for the environment. The new bike shed is one of the measures of Action Plan Coast , to keep the 11 kilometer long coast of The Hague more accessible, safer, liveable and hospitable.
