The municipality of The Hague has plans to redesign the Pletterijkade. Work is currently being done on the sewer and the quay on the Pletterijkade and its surroundings. The municipality wants to make the street safer and greener immediately after the work. The street will be designed as a maximum 30 kilometres per hour street.

The Pletterijkade is an important connection between the city centre and the Binckhorst, and part of a long cycle route that connects the city centre of The Hague with Ypenburg and Pijnacker-Nootdorp. The Pletterijkade is being transformed into a Star Cycle Route, so that cyclists can cycle through here safely, comfortably and without delay.

Alderman Arjen Kapteijns (Mobility): “ With the new design of the Pletterijkade, we are making The Hague even more bicycle-friendly. Cyclists will soon be able to cycle safely and comfortably, while pedestrians, residents and visitors can enjoy a greener and more beautiful environment along the water. This ties in well with our plans for an accessible and pleasant city.

What will change for cyclists and pedestrians?

The new layout will give cyclists and pedestrians more space and make the street safer. The Pletterijkade will become a bicycle street where cars will be allowed to drive at a maximum speed of 30 kilometres per hour. Cyclists will be able to cycle next to each other and overtake each other safely.

A new bicycle crossing towards the Binckhorst will be built on the Rijswijkseplein, so that the Rijswijkseplein can be crossed in both directions. The sidewalks will be wider and there will be more trees and seating along the water, making it more pleasant to walk. Cars can continue to use this street, but the amount of car traffic will be reduced, because the left turn from the Rijswijkseweg to the Pletterijkade will be closed. This will make the street even safer for cyclists.

Design adjusted after comments

After the preliminary design was released, residents were able to respond with their views. Some suggestions will be included in the final design that is yet to be drawn up. The most important change is, among other things, the addition of a two-way cycle path on the Rijswijkseplein between the Scheepmakersstraat and the Van Maanenkade. And the request to plant different types of trees along the houses has been included in the design.

Future growth

The redevelopment is also a preparation for the future. The number of cyclists on this route is expected to double to 10,000 per day by 2030, and with the houses to be built in the Binckhorst and also the Laakhavens area, this can grow further. With these changes, The Hague is working on a safer and more sustainable city for cyclists and pedestrians ,” says alderman Kapteijns.
