This afternoon, the Sand Sculptures by the Sea were judged by a professional jury. Nine sand sculptures were created in Scheveningen during the last week. During the official opening today, the jury announced the three winning works of art.
The sculpture ‘Buitengewone Beestenboel’ (Extraordinary Animal Farm), which depicts an African landscape and was made by Helena Bangert, came in third place.

The sculpture ‘Ritme aan Zee’ (Rhythm of the City) with iconic headpiece by Mick Jagger, which shows the musical side of The Hague and Scheveningen, came in second place. It was made by Tautvilas Povilionis and Jamie Louks.

For the first place, the jury unanimously chose the sculpture ‘Veilig op Zee’ (Safe at Sea), an ode to the KNRM and The Hague Rescue Brigade, made by Marjon Katerberg.
The exhibition of sand artworks can be visited free of charge until June 1.
The jury consisted of Heino Walbroek, Ben Vermijs and David Schoch. The trio visited all the works of art on Wednesday afternoon.

“Many technical elements were used in the phenomenal sculpture of Veilig aan Zee. In addition, a connection was made between the present and the past. It also shows how important lifeguards from The Hague are to the city,” said jury chairman Walbroek.
About the second place winner he said: “The Hague is not called the Beat City for nothing. Goldband, Anouk, the Earring and the legendary performance of The Rolling Stones can be seen in it. We were impressed by the position of the sand construction. It is an invitation to discover the entire exhibition.”
The third winner is located on the boulevard. About this sculpture the jury said: “It looks incredibly beautiful and has a special background story. You can almost see the elephants coming out of the sculpture.”
It is now the public’s turn to vote. Everyone can vote for the public award via zandsculpturenaanzee.nl until 1 June. This website has more information about all the sculptures, as well as the current renovations happening along the boulevard.
Great prizes will be raffled among the voters. A few side activities are planned around the sculptures.
