The municipality of The Hague is starting an ongoing collection campaign for children’s bicycles. From now on, residents can hand in children’s bicycles all year round at all city farms. Previously, this was only possible during collection campaigns. These bicycles are refurbished and passed on to children from families who have difficulty buying a bicycle themselves.
Alderman Kapteijns emphasizes the importance of this campaign: “A bicycle expands a child’s world. It not only offers fun, but also transportation to school, sports clubs and friends. Unfortunately, not every family can afford a bicycle. With this campaign, we want to ensure that every child in The Hague has a bicycle. It is great that residents can now hand in children’s bicycles all year round, because this lowers the threshold for donating and ensures a constant flow of bicycles. Moreover, the fact that the bicycles can be handed in at all city farms makes it accessible and easy for everyone.”
The municipality is looking for bicycles from 20 to 26 inches, suitable for children aged 8 to 12. The collected bicycles are refurbished by Stichting Leren Doen, in collaboration with students from the practical education of the ROC Mondriaan and the Esloo College. The bicycles are then given to the children via partners, such as primary schools and Stichting Leergeld Den Haag. Parents with an Ooievaarspas can apply for a bicycle for only €7.50. In addition to the bicycle, they receive a bicycle passport, with which they can have repairs carried out within three years or exchange the bicycle for a larger bicycle.
