Significant investments have been made in the ecological zone at the former Haga Hospital on Sportlaan over the past year. A helipad has been removed and eco-friendly banks have been created. The seeding process has also given this part of the Haagse Beekzone a colorful boost. Alderman Barker has sown a special flower and herb mixture here.
Recently, extensive work has been done around the Red Cross Park to restore the natural environment. Large sections of paved surfaces—including the former helicopter pad and a parking lot—have been removed. Many native plant species that are well-suited to The Hague’s natural environment have also been planted. The stream banks have also been softened, creating more space for plants and animals. The area has then been sown with a unique flower mixture from The Hague. Alderman Robert Barker (Outdoor Space, Animal Welfare and the Environment): “This green investment will create a more attractive habitat for insects, birds, and even foxes. This will significantly strengthen the Haagse Beek stream.”
Work almost finished
Although most of the work has now been completed, one important step remains to be completed: the landscaping of the banks. This is expected to take place in May or June of next year. Currently, the former hospital (which borders the ecozone) has a temporary purpose. This ecozone will remain in its final form.
More ecozones in the city
The Hague Beekzone isn’t an isolated area. The municipality will soon begin new planting projects in the Houtzone in Benoordenhout, once again focusing on more greenery, biodiversity, and a healthy living environment. Alderman Barker: “We’re investing heavily in the ecological corridors. These are important connections in the city for animals like hedgehogs and wrens. This way, we’re strengthening nature in the city.”
