De Passage celebrated its 140th anniversary today (Sunday 11 May) with a special high tea, where invited guests and visitors came together to honour the oldest shopping arcade in the Netherlands. The festive gathering took place in the middle of De Passage itself and was sold out.

The highlight of the afternoon was the presence of Mayor Jan van Zanen, who dwelled with warm words on the rich history and special place that De Passage occupies in The Hague’s cityscape. ‘A Passage like this one, modelled on Paris and Brussels, still contributes to the unique atmosphere and identity of The Hague city centre,’ the mayor said.

On behalf of the shopkeepers’ association, a unique watercolour, created by Boy Boelhouwer, of The Passage was presented to the mayor and director of a.s.r. real estate, Edwin van de Woestijne.

Guests enjoyed an extensive selection of savoury and sweet delicacies from Hop & Stork, including freshly baked scones, sandwiches and refined desserts, accompanied by a diverse selection of teas from Simon Lévelt. Students from the Mondriaan provided the service. The high tea was framed by live entertainment by the Royal Conservatoire The Hague, which contributed to the festive atmosphere.

With this special afternoon, De Passage proudly looks back on 140 years of history, experience and connection. ‘It was great to see so many people come together and share memories of this unique place,’ said chairman of the shopkeepers’ association Anil Soekhoe ‘We thank everyone who celebrated this milestone with us.’
