The Hague will grow rapidly in the coming years and will welcome many new residents by 2040. This requires additional housing, schools, and amenities, as well as smart solutions for the increasing traffic and movement in the city. That’s why The Hague, Westland, and the Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Region are jointly investing in an improved, comfortable, and safe cycling route between Westland and The Hague.

The cycle route runs from Naaldwijk via Honselersdijk to The Hague and is part of the network of so-called Metropolitan Cycle Routes. These routes are wider, safe, and comfortable, making cycling an attractive alternative to driving. The two municipalities and the province of South Holland are improving the cycle path along an 8-kilometer stretch (part of which runs along provincial road N464) so that residents can cycle comfortably, safely, and pleasantly from home to work and back again. This contributes to improved accessibility in the region and reduces CO₂ emissions from traffic.

” The Hague is growing, and that calls for smart choices ,” says Alderman Arjen Kapteijns (Mobility). ” With this cycle route, we’re making it easier and more attractive to cycle. That’s good for accessibility, good for the climate, and simply more pleasant for everyone who lives and works here. “

Fewer cars, more space

Around 100,000 people travel between The Hague and Westland every day. Currently, most of them travel by car, partly because existing cycle routes are often unclear and inconvenient. The new cycle route aims to change that.

In the Zuidwest district, 10,000 new homes will be added in the coming years. The municipality wants as many residents as possible to travel by foot, bicycle, or public transport. This will result in less traffic congestion, cleaner air, and more space in the city.

Planning and financing

Preparations will begin no later than March 2028 and will be largely completed by September 2028. The section near Melis Stokelaan will require more time because it coincides with major sewer works.

The Rotterdam The Hague Metropolitan Region (MRDH) is making a significant contribution to this project with a subsidy. Up to 70 percent of the costs of the cycle route will be covered. The municipalities of The Hague and Westland signed a partnership agreement today to this effect.
