The Hague municipal enforcement officers (BOAs) will now also enforce minor traffic violations. The enforcement officers can issue fines for the absence or incorrect use of bicycle lights, cyclists and pedestrians ignoring red lights and using a mobile phone while cycling. Tuesday evening kicked off a targeted action around the Koekamp where the Hague enforcement officers addressed the absence of bicycle lights with dozens of people.

Alderman Robert Barker (Outdoor Space, Animal Welfare & Environment) was present: ‘The Hague is a busy city where pedestrians, cyclists and motorists constantly cross paths. Every year, there are around 1,300 traffic accidents in The Hague involving cyclists or pedestrians. Cycling without lights or looking at your phone while cycling may seem harmless, but can quickly lead to dangerous situations. With the efforts of our enforcement officers, we can contribute to a safer city.’
Previously, only the police were authorized to enforce minor traffic violations. Now, BOAs also have this authority. After making agreements with the police and an induction period, The Hague enforcement officers will now also issue fines for these violations.
