This week, The Hague is celebrating Climate Week: an extensive program with over 35 activities where residents and businesses join forces to demonstrate how enjoyable and inspiring sustainable living can be. From green workshops to culinary routes and city walks, there’s something to do throughout the city.

The Hague Climate Week is part of the national Climate Week, which draws attention throughout the Netherlands to sustainable initiatives and climate-conscious living.

Aldermen Arjen Kapteijns (Energy Transition, Mobility and Raw Materials) and Robert Barker (Public Space, Animal Welfare and Environment) officially opened the week today with a sustainable breakfast. Arjen Kapteijns: “The Hague Climate Week shows that sustainability is not only necessary, but also fun, educational, and connecting.”

Green energy from The Hague heroes

Climate Week is all about the power of local initiatives. Energy coaches, circular entrepreneurs, community chefs, and nature lovers are working daily to create a greener The Hague. During this week, they’re joining forces to inspire others.

“More greenery in your street helps combat the effects of the climate crisis. Summer heat stress is reduced, water is better conserved, and people are happier in a green environment. I’m glad we’re highlighting this in The Hague with our Climate Week. Let’s green many more streets,” says Alderman Robert Barker.

For example, forest ranger Marie-Louise takes residents into the dunes and shows how climate change is affecting nature: “The seasons are shifting, and rainfall and drought are alternating more dramatically. You can see that in the vegetation.” Her walks were fully booked in no time — a sign that The Hague residents cherish their urban nature.
