With the new Hague Plan against Muslim discrimination, the municipality of The Hague is committed to concrete measures to combat Muslim discrimination and ensure that Muslims can participate freely, safely, and equally in The Hague.

The municipality is taking concrete action within the city. For example, schools are actively supported with curriculum materials on The Hague’s Islamic heritage, Muslim discrimination, and equal treatment, and all schools are invited to visit a mosque in The Hague. Internship discrimination is being combated through collaboration with internship companies. The municipality is also making it easier to report discrimination. Confidential advisors are being appointed to support reporting and filing complaints, and awareness of the Discrimination.nl The Hague reporting center is being increased. Furthermore, the municipality is investing in neighborhood gatherings, such as interfaith gatherings and community celebrations—including iftar—to strengthen connections and break down prejudice.

Alderwoman Mariëlle Vavier (Inclusion) calls the plan desperately needed: “That everyone in The Hague can be themselves should be self-evident. But for many Muslims in The Hague, that’s still not the case. I hear too many stories about exclusion, insecurity, being treated differently, and even violence against Muslims. That touches me deeply. Because our city should be everyone’s home. With this plan, we say very clearly: enough is enough. Muslim discrimination has no place here. We choose concrete action. In education, on the streets, in the job market, and within the municipality itself. Only then can we build a city together where no one has to hide or apologize for who they are.”

Together with the city

The plan was developed in collaboration with the city. In 2024 and 2025, hundreds of The Hague residents—including young people, women, and representatives of Islamic and community organizations—engaged in discussions with the municipality. Their experiences, ideas, and concerns form the basis of this plan.

With the Hague Plan against Muslim discrimination, The Hague aims to structurally work towards a city where Muslims feel at home, safe, can be themselves, and can fully participate. The Hague Plan against Muslim discrimination is part of the broader policy document ” Inclusive Coexistence: Everyone Different, Everyone from The Hague ,” which also includes the Hague Plan against Antisemitism.
