New streets in the Binckhorst area of The Hague will soon be named after zodiac signs and their associated animals. Names such as Ramstraat (Aries, the Ram), Stierstraat (Taurus, the Bull) and Leeuwstraat (Leo, the Lion) will be added as part of ongoing urban development in the district.
According to Robert Barker, Alderman for Public Space, Animal Welfare and the Environment, the names invite both playful and personal associations. “If you cycle through these streets in the future, you can think of stars, horoscopes or simply animals. Living on a street with an animal name seems very fitting to me as Alderman for Animal Welfare,” he said.
All streets in this part of the Binckhorst follow a celestial naming theme. Existing names already include Maanstraat (Moon) and Zonstraat (Sun). The new additions expand this theme to constellations commonly used in astrology, including Ramstraat (Aries, the Ram), Stierstraat (Taurus, the Bull), Schorpioenstraat (Scorpio, the Scorpion), Kreeftstraat (Cancer, the Crab), Leeuwstraat (Leo, the Lion) and Vissenstraat (Pisces, the Fish).
The new street names will be introduced in the area of the De Nieuwe Hallen construction project.
