Starting Monday, June 1, 2026, the Municipality of The Hague and HTM will carry out major maintenance work on Rijswijkseplein. The work will last through Friday, October 2, 2026, and consists of replacing tram tracks and asphalt. Road users and travelers should expect diversions and extra travel time.
HTM is replacing the tram tracks for tram lines 1, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, and 17. At the same time, the Municipality of The Hague is replacing the asphalt on and around Rijswijkseplein. The work is necessary to ensure the safety, accessibility, and traffic flow of this road.
Works in four phases
To minimize disruption, the work will be carried out in four phases:
- Phase 1 (June 1 to July 17): Work on tram tracks towards Rijswijkseplein and on the road on the square and part of the Weteringkade.
- Phase 2 (July 18 to August 16): Work on tram tracks between Hofwijckstraat and Stationsplein.
- Phase 3 (17 August to 18 September): Work on tram tracks between The Hague Tower and the Van Maanenkade and on the road from Waldorpstraat to Spaarneplein.
- Phase 4 (21 September to 2 October): Roadworks at De Haagse Toren on Stationsplein.
- Work within some phases is carried out in sub-phases. Up-to-date information on closures and diversion routes can be found at denhaag.nl/rijswijkseplein
Consequences for traffic and public transport
Rijswijkseplein is an important hub for road and public transport. During the works, diversions will be in place for road traffic and public transport. From June 4 to August 30, several tram lines will operate on altered routes. Bus lines 22, 26, and 29, as well as night bus 5, will also temporarily operate differently. Travelers are advised to check current travel information via htm.nl and the HTM app before departure. Homes and businesses will remain accessible to pedestrians at all times; no work will be carried out on the sidewalks.
Advice to travelers
The municipality and HTM advise road users and travelers to adjust their travel behavior where possible, for example by traveling outside peak hours, working from home, or using a bicycle or alternative public transport.
