Yesterday, on the last day of The Hague Climate Week, the construction of a new nature reserve, Vlietweide, was officially launched. Aldermen Robert Barker of The Hague and Marcel Belt of Leidschendam-Voorburg jointly planted the first two trees on Westvlietweg in this unique new nature reserve between The Hague and Leidschendam-Voorburg.

After years of preparation, the municipality of The Hague began construction on Vlietweide on Sunday, November 16th. In this nearly 13-hectare nature reserve, the municipality is creating shallow waters and planting various trees and shrubs. This will make Vlietweide an attractive habitat for various species of birds, toads, and insects. Vlietweide is located in the Vlietzone on the outskirts of The Hague and borders Leidschendam-Voorburg. Robert Barker (Alderman for Public Space, Animal Welfare, and the Environment) is pleased with this first step: “Starting today, we are going to create a unique nature reserve here. In such a highly urbanized environment, it is quite special that the municipality of The Hague can create such a large natural area. I hope that many animals, such as insects and birds, will be attracted to it.”

Walking, playground and biodiversity

With this step, the municipality is giving a major boost to the biodiversity of The Hague and its surroundings. The area will also be accessible to visitors. A walking path will be constructed, benches will be installed, and a playground will be created. This will mark the festive launch of the construction of Vlietweide. Vlietweide is located in the Vlietzone. A plan (area program) has been developed for this area, combining living, working, sports, recreation, and nature. The General Association for Nature Conservation in The Hague and surrounding areas (AVN) collaborated on the plan for Vlietweide.
