Traveling to Portugal? Here’s your Ultimate Food Guide on eating like a Local

Traveling to Portugal? Here’s your Ultimate Food Guide on eating like a Local

What if I told you that one of Portugal’s greatest cultural experiences isn’t found in a museum, but around a dining table?

The tasca is more than a restaurant — it’s a place where locals come together to gather, share, and connect as a community. It is a celebration of authentic flavours, local traditions, and the relationships built over a meal. Because sometimes, food tells the best stories.

If you’re traveling to Portugal this summer, chances are you already have a list of must-see attractions. But there’s one experience that may not be on your radar: the tasca. These beloved local establishments have long been at the heart of Portuguese communities, and now Portugal is inviting the world to discover their charm.

Click here to view the extensive list of tascas around the country. From duck rice, to bacalhau (cod fish) – your taste buds are in for a treat.

‘Fight Night’ @ theatre DE VESTE Delft (29 May 2026)

‘Fight Night’ @ theatre DE VESTE Delft (29 May 2026)

‘Fight Night’ at theatre DE VESTE – and the audience decides the winner

On 29 May, theatre DE VESTE hosts the electrifying 2024 remake of ‘Fight Night’ by Ontroerend Goed. Five contenders. Five rounds. One decisive vote — and the audience holds all the power. English language production.

Described by The Independent as “a cross between Big Brother and an Italian general election,” Fight Night is a sharp, playful and unsettling examination of democracy itself. Campaigns, debates, spin doctors and polls collide in a high-energy theatrical experiment where everything is designed to influence your choice — except political persuasion.

Ten years after its acclaimed premiere and worldwide tours from Australia to Canada and beyond, this remake reflects a changed world, where trust in democracy is more fragile than ever.

And the night doesn’t end when the curtain falls: students from TU Delft take over with a spectacular Kaleidos afterparty, turning DE VESTE into a vibrant late-night celebration of music, ideas and energy.

A bold theatre event — and an unforgettable night where your vote truly counts.

  • Venue: theater DE VESTE – Delft
  • Ticket box: 015-2121312
  • Prices: students € 10 euro / regular tickets: € 26,50 incl. a drink

BredaPhoto Festival (11 September – 25 October 2026)

BredaPhoto Festival (11 September – 25 October 2026)

From September 11 to October 25, 2026, the twelfth edition of BredaPhoto Festival will take place, the largest photo exhibition in the Benelux. Spread throughout the city of Breda, the festival showcases photography and audiovisual art in surprising locations: from parks and vacant buildings to a former police station and the old women’s prison. The theme is Our Songs Came Through .

The twelfth edition of BredaPhoto Festival is about solace and resilience. What do you need to pick yourself up again after a difficult event? How do you turn worries about the world we live in into hope? Sometimes you find strength in rituals, spirituality, and art, by caring for one another with friends, family, or allies. Or you recharge your batteries alone in the silence of nature. Under the title Our Songs Came Through , BredaPhoto brings together impressive photographs, video art, and immersive installations, from leading makers to young talents. Sometimes the visitor even becomes part of the work. BredaPhoto tells stories that touch you, of people in different parts of the world who may be closer to you than you expect. The festival brings together work by more than thirty photographers and artists, often being shown in the Netherlands for the first time, and sometimes created especially for the festival.

For example, Palestinian artist Noor Abed is creating the video installation we walk in our sleep especially for this edition. Together with family, friends, and neighbors, she connects old traditions with contemporary life in Palestine. Through movement and choreography, she poetically portrays a spatial and political vision of her homeland. The project is commissioned by BredaPhoto and the Matter of Art Biennial with support from the Mondriaan Fund and the Han Nefkens Foundation.

Awoiska van der Molen ‘s monochrome landscape photographs arise from the desire to penetrate deep into the essence of the isolated natural world.

For The Living Mountain, she collaborated with composer Thomas Larcher to convey the experience of Larcher’s native soil—the mountains in Tyrol (Austria)—in a composition of music and imagery.

Huda Abdulmughni documents the celebration of Nowruz Sayadeen, the Iranian New Year, on the island of Qeshm. She shows how the residents of this fishing community find togetherness, comfort, and resilience in tradition, community, and nature.

An Exploration of Resilience and Resistance by Kali Spitzer is an ongoing project that began in 2014. Through the timeless lens of tintype photography, she portrays her community of Indigenous and mixed-race people in Canada, aiming to create more visibility for their stories.

In Uprooted, Puck Verkade takes the audience into a dreamlike installation in which human destruction ultimately gives way to new life and caring coexistence with plants and animals.

The program is further enriched by FOTODOK, Stichting Forhanna, and new partner Institut Pour la Photographie in Lille, who are bringing additional exhibitions to the festival in close collaboration with the BredaPhoto team.

More than exhibitions

In addition to the exhibitions, the BredaPhoto Festival offers much more to see and do. There is an extensive in-depth program consisting of guided tours, performances, artist talks, Zen meditations, film screenings, workshops, and various activities for children. Furthermore, a city-wide program is being developed in collaboration with Breda partners such as the Stedelijk Museum Breda, the City Archives, the Chassé Theater, and the Nieuwe Veste. BredaPhoto also thinks of those who cannot attend the festival: with a suitcase full of beautiful images, staff and volunteers visit care homes in the region and the hospital in Breda to engage in conversation about comfort and resilience, based on the universal stories of this edition.

Tickets for the festival will be available from June 1, 2026. Keep an eye on the website BredaPhoto.nl for this and for news.

The BredaPhoto Festival can only take place thanks to the support of many funds, sponsors, friends, and volunteers. We thank in particular the Municipality of Breda, the Province of North Brabant, Brabant C, the Mondriaan Fund, and the private individuals who support us financially and as volunteers.

Keukenhof 2026 season (19 March to 10 May)

Keukenhof 2026 season (19 March to 10 May)

Keukenhof has officially opened its gates for the 2026 season, welcoming visitors from 19 March to 10 May. Each year, around 1.4 million people from across the world visit the iconic spring garden, making it one of the Netherlands’ most important attractions for tourism and the floriculture sector.

Set in the heart of the blooming Bulb Region, the 32-hectare park forms part of the historic Keukenhof Estate, which dates back to the 17th century and includes Keukenhof Castle. This year, visitors can once again explore millions of flowers in bloom, with over 7 million bulbs planted by 40 gardeners and more than 1,600 varieties on display.

A highlight for 2026 is the newly renovated Juliana Pavilion, which now hosts the orchid show. The exhibition explores the diversity of orchids through themes such as habitats, culture, and anatomy, combining education with striking floral design.

Keukenhof continues to serve as a showcase for the Dutch horticulture sector, with around 500 growers contributing flowers and plants. The park is redesigned annually, ensuring a fresh experience each season, while its historic gardens offer insight into the origins of tulips in the Netherlands.

In addition to its floral displays, visitors can explore 15 kilometres of walking paths, discover art installations, visit the historic windmill, or take a boat trip through the surrounding bulb fields.

Getting there from The Hague

Keukenhof is located in Lisse, about 30 to 40 minutes from The Hague. The easiest way to visit is by car, but public transport is also straightforward. Travellers can take a train to Leiden or Schiphol Airport, followed by a direct Keukenhof bus. During the season, special Keukenhof buses run frequently and are timed to connect with arriving trains.
