Across the world, democracies are under strain. Civil society is increasingly under pressure, spaces for dissent and dialogue are narrowing, freedom of religion is being contested, and polarization is shaping political discourse. These challenges may unfold differently across contexts, but their echoes are global and deeply concerning.

Our panel discussion- which will feature Marieke Koekkoek (Volt), Fatimazhra Belhirch (D66), and Isa Kahraman (NSC)- will begin with the situation in India, where activists, journalists, and religious minorities face rising restrictions. We will then turn our attention to the Netherlands, where debates around civil liberties, minority rights and inclusion shape the political discourse.

Together, we will explore these troubling trends and the urgent need to safeguard democratic values, locally and globally.
