As part of World Press Freedom Day, the NVJ, NDP Nieuwsmedia, Persvrijheidsfonds and Beeld & Geluid are organizing the Press Freedom Lecture at Theater aan het Spui (HNT) in The Hague on April 14. This edition, Ann Telnaes, former cartoonist at the Washington Post, will be interviewed by journalist Marieke de Vries about this year’s theme: Cartoonists under fire.

Ann Telnaes worked for The Washington Post for over 16 years and won the Pulitzer Prize and the Herblock Prize for her editorial cartoons. She recently resigned after a cartoon she submitted was rejected because it criticized, among others, Jeff Bezos, the owner of the newspaper.

Cartoonists under fire
After her lecture, Ann will talk to Marieke de Vries, former American correspondent for NOS. They will discuss the important role of cartoonists and the continued existence and threats to the profession. The translation will also be made to press freedom and political satire in the Netherlands and Europe.

About the Press Freedom Lecture

The Press Freedom Lecture is an initiative of the Press Freedom Day Committee. Since 1993, International Press Freedom Day has been held on May 3. This day is commemorated worldwide and solidarity is requested for colleagues who are imprisoned or cannot do their work in freedom. The day also aims to continue the debate on press freedom.

Beeld & Geluid is co-organizer of the Press Freedom Lecture 2025 because stimulating the free press and promoting news literacy are core objectives. The unique collection of the former Dutch Press Museum is part of Beeld & Geluid and we are happy to offer a platform for gathering knowledge about free, pluralistic press. Beeld & Geluid also initiates, facilitates and stimulates collection development and research in the field of journalism and society.
