Soep Stories, a special photo exhibition, is now on display in the Atrium in The HagueThe photo exhibition Soep Stories was festively opened yesterday in the Atrium in The Hague . In this special exhibition you will meet eight 80-year-old residents of The Hague, one from each city district, photographed at their own dining table. This generation, born in or just before the year of liberation, shares personal stories about freedom. Soep Stories is part of the Hague Freedom Meals and can be visited free of charge from 9 April to 7 May 2025.

The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on questions that are not often asked out loud: What does freedom mean to the first generation that grew up in freedom? Does your view of freedom change when you are eighty? Do we reflect enough on the freedoms in our lives? And how often do we ask about the sense of freedom of another? The photo exhibition encourages conversation and connection.

![]() Edith de Gilde, one of the portrayed people and born on May 3, 1945 in the Westeinde Hospital, recited a poem by Martijn den Ouden about freedom during the opening. Her story is one of the powerful examples of the memory of freedom: “Born in the year of freedom – that is something that stays with you. My generation was lucky. We grew up in a time of reconstruction, with opportunities that the generation below us did not have. We know that things can be different and that freedom does not come automatically.” |
