Dr. Bruijn, born in The Hague, studied medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Erasmus University in Rotterdam. He obtained his PhD and specialized in clinical pathology at Leiden University and Harvard University. Since 1996, he has been a full professor of clinical pathology at Leiden University Medical Centre and has authored numerous textbooks and over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications.

In addition to his distinguished academic career, Dr. Bruijn has held numerous prominent leadership roles, including chairman of the national Council on Science, Technology, and Innovation, president of the International Renal Pathology Society, and chair of the Supervisory Board of the Amsterdam University of the Arts. He is also a member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities.

In public service, Dr. Bruijn has played a significant role in Dutch politics. He was elected senator in 2012, served as President of the Dutch Senate from 2019 to 2025, and most recently held the position of Minister of Healthcare, Welfare, and Sports (2025–2026).
