On 19 April, Stichting Kwintessens will once again perform the compelling work Kanon Pokajanen by Arvo Pärt. This special performance will take place in a quiet setting: standing in a circle in the middle of the church, lit only by candles and lamps on the stands. The listener will be around this living circle of sound and will be, as it were, absorbed into the ritual.

Arvo Pärt’s Cannon Pokajanen

Arvo Pärt is one of the most influential composers of our time. His music, characterized by simplicity, silence and spiritual depth, touches people from all backgrounds worldwide. The Kanon Pokajanen is one of his most compelling works: a setting of an ancient Slavic Orthodox penitential canon from the 6th century. The text is connected to the Easter story and speaks of repentance, hope, forgiveness and redemption. Pärt worked on this composition for more than two years and considers it to be one of his most personal works. Especially during Easter, this piece takes on a special meaning: from darkness to light, from suffering to new life.

A new Easter tradition led by Raoul Boesten

Conductor Raoul Boesten has worked with Arvo Pärt several times and has performed the Kanon Pokajanen in many forms. Under his leadership, this work has grown into an annual Easter moment for those looking for depth, silence and connection.
What started as a one-off project has grown into a permanent fixture in the musical Easter landscape. A tradition that invites reflection – and continues to inspire.
