The Hague invites residents and visitors to look at the city from a whole new perspective during the Uit je dak-dagen (“Get On Your Roof Days”).

Across the weekend, rooftops that are normally closed to the public will be opened up for special activities, tours and cultural experiences. The event showcases how rooftops can be used for a greener, healthier and more sustainable city.

Highlights include:

  • EnergieKas – Start the day with rooftop yoga and a guided tour.
  • Sijthoff City – Visit the rooftop garden.
  • De Bijenkorf – Take part in a guided rooftop tour.
  • Ministry of Defence – Experience unique rooftop activities.
  • City Hall – Explore an exhibition on the potential of The Hague’s rooftops.

You can also climb the 288 steps of the Hague Tower at the Grote Kerk, enjoy the Binnenhof lookout tower, or relax at rooftop terraces such as Bleyenberg and Grandcafé Haagsche Bluf. On Sunday, the Haags Hoog initiative at The New Farm also hosts an open day.

Resident stories as inspiration

Visit the website below for inspiration on how local residents have transformed their own rooftops (in Dutch):

  • Gerben explains how he created a green roof and applied for subsidies to do so.
  • Tom combines recyclable solar panels with a flowering rooftop garden.
  • Erwin collects rainwater on his roof for sustainable use at home.

Why visit?

The Hague’s rooftops cover a surface area equal to the dunes between Hoek van Holland and Scheveningen, or 17 times the size of Zuiderpark. By opening them up, this event demonstrates the enormous potential these spaces have for sustainability, creativity, and community.
