About an hour’s drive from The Hague, nestled in West Friesland, is the Little Dutch Farm. A traditional Dutch ‘Stolp’ farmhouse welcomes you, built in 1901. The surrounding landscape is postcard-perfect, with a dike lined by towering trees, vast meadows stretching into the distance, and fields dotted with cows, tulips, and windmills. Even for locals, this setting captures the essence of the Dutch countryside.
On the farm, a small meadow and stables house four horses, while an orchard brims with fruit trees. A vegetable garden flourishes nearby, and a pond, teeming with water lilies, ducks, and frogs, adds to the serene atmosphere, accompanied by a constant chorus of birds. Two farm cats, Miss and Tommie, share the space with a Bernese Mountain Dog named Balou. Soon, the farm will welcome a small flock of chickens and a drove of pigs.
With a vision of living more sustainably, they are working toward taking the farm off the grid. This journey is a return to a simpler, more intentional way of life—one that values home-grown food, community, and a deep connection with nature. This slower pace is both healing and grounding, echoing the Dutch concept of boeren verstand, or farmer’s wisdom.
